KUCHING: International magazine Euromoney has once again named AirAsia Bhd (AirAsia) as the winner of the ‘Best Managed Company in Asia for the Airlines and Aviation Sector’, for Euromoney’s ‘Best Managed and Governed Companies – Asia Poll 2014’.

AirAsia was the winner of the same accolade in 2013, a tribute to the company’s focus on integration and expansion and excellent corporate foresight of the aviation industry.

The poll is based on replies received from a total of 93 of the leading equity analysts at the largest investment banks and research houses in the Asia Pacific region nominating a total of 214 different companies.

Analysts were asked to name which companies were the most impressive across a number of factors including; management accessibility, accounting transparency and corporate governance procedures amongst others.
Analysts praised AirAsia for its leading role in promoting transparent communication to investors, citing that “the company has a clear strategy and good visibility”.

Analysts also noted that “AirAsia senior management continues to demonstrate prudent gearing, transparency, good governance and clear articulation of strategy.”

Aireen Omar, chief executive officer of AirAsia said, “This is an excellent start for us in 2014, being the recipient of one of the highest accolades in the industry from Euromoney.

“This achievement reflects our commitment to ensure utmost transparency and good governance in our business, in order to preserve the confidence of our stakeholders and investors.

“Total confidence and unshaken credibility is vital in our quest to expand the business and extend our reach across the region and beyond.”

This is the 15th annual ranking of the Best Managed and Governed Companies in Asia that Euromoney has published and is seen as the benchmark survey of the opinions of equity analysts in the region.

Clive Horwood, editor of Euromoney Magazine, said, “The continuing prominence of Asia in global markets has created new growth opportunities for Asian companies.

“Through our annual survey, leading analysts covering Asia across all sectors have rewarded well governed institutions for sound financials and transparent relations with an increasingly wider investor pool.”

PETALING JAYA: An international travel award has named local budget carrier Air Asia the "World's Leading Low-Cost Airline" this year.

In a statement on Sunday, Air Asia executive chairman, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun said: "It is a great honour to win this award, as this places ‘brand Malaysia’ on a great pedestal so that we can achieve our mission to develop the country into a major aviation hub like Dubai."

He added that the company was going to turn 12 in a few days, Kamarudin expressed pride over what he called "a Malaysian-grown dream" that turned into a "world-class airline".

"As a home grown airline, we feel responsible to propel our nation’s aviation industry further, and we would need the support of our government and Malaysians alike to achieve that," he said.
Air Asia director Datuk Aziz Bakar received the award on behalf of his airline.

Air Asia was previously nominated under the awards' 2012 World's Leading Low-Cost Airline, 2010 World's Leading Airline to Asia and 2007 Asia's Leading Budget/No Frills Airline categories.

It was also nominated for the "World's Leading Airline 2013" but lost to the United Arab Emirates' Etihad Airways.

French award for AirAsia boss for contribution to aviation industry

PARIS: AirAsia group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes has been conferred with an award by the French government for his contribution to the Malaysian aviation industry and economy.

Fernandes received the Commander of the Legion d’Honneur award from French president Francois Hollande during a ceremony held at the Elysée Palace here yesterday.
The Malaysian corporate captain said it was truly an honour to be conferred the award, adding that he was “humbled” by the recognition.

“Aviation is an important industry that not only contributes to the economy of countries, but also provides jobs, connects communities and enhances livelihoods.
“As the group CEO of AirAsia, I am proud that we have positively contributed both directly and indirectly towards many people’s lives,” he said.

The Legion d’Honneur award was started by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 to recognise outstanding service of individuals to France, with the Commander of the Legion d’Honneur being the highest rank of honour that the French government can award to a non-French citizen.
Fernandes was previously conferred the Officier of the Legion d’Honneur award by the French Government in 2010.

The AirAsia Group operates an all-Airbus fleet, which has contributed significantly towards French and European economies via the European-owned and Toulouse-based company.
It has firm orders of 475 Airbus A320s for AirAsia, and 25 Airbus A330-300 and 10 Airbus A350-900 for AirAsia X.
